Yep, it is much much faster on the auto focus, and quiet too! It is not the new one with IS (Image Stabilization; 3rd reincarnation, that particular version gives me nightmares of too many moving clanky parts though, which is unlike the confidence I get from the IS on the 17-55mm IS USM or the 17-85mm IS USM).

I primarily find it useful and sharp for crowded "quick draw" flash photography at f/5.6 to f/8, where you want the smallest package as well as the lightest, with out the worry of scratching a heavier much more expensive 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. It's a good work horse.
